10 Health Benefits of Tea

Tea is a wonderful beverage. Whether it's a hot summer day or a brisk winter morning, there is a tea for every occasion. Not only can it be enjoyed at any point of the year, but it also has health benefit packed it! Here are 10 of those health benefits you get every time you turn the kettle on.

1. Tea contains antioxidants

Antioxidants work to prevent the body's version of rust and thus help to keep us young and protect us from damage from pollution.

2. Tea has less caffeine than coffee

Herbal blends have no caffeine, while traditional teas have less than 50 percent of what typically is found in coffee. That means you can consume it without those pesky effects on your nervous system, says Leslie Bonci, nutritionist and owner of Active Eating Advice.

3. Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke

"There's a lot of literature out there on tea and heart health," says Anna Ardine, clinical nutrition manager at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "This is a health effect for which there is the strongest evidence."

4. Tea may help with weight loss

Research on this isn't as strong, Ardine says, adding that studies that have shown an effect have depended on consumption of large amounts of tea, often in pill form.

5. Tea may help protect your bones

Data from recent animal studies has shown that green tea may prevent bone loss.

6. Tea may keep your smile bright

"Japanese researchers have found that tea can decrease tooth loss," Ardine says. "It changes the pH in your mouth when you drink it and that may be what prevents cavities." Beyond that, tea, unlike many other beverages does not appear to erode tooth enamel, Bonci says.

7. Tea may boost the immune system

Studies have shown tea can tune up immune cells so they reach their targets quicker.

8. Tea may help battle cancer

Studies on this are currently mixed, which means more research is needed, Bonci says. But, in the meantime, "if you've got a strong family history of cancer and you want to do anything you can, you might increase your tea consumption," she adds.

9. Herbal tea may soothe the digestive system

"Herbal teas, in particular chamomile, can be good for people with irritable bowel syndrome because it is an antispasmodic," Bonci says. "And ginger teas can calm nausea."

10. Tea — unadulterated, that is — is calorie free

"It's a great no-calorie alternative to water," Bonci says. "It provides so many options for flavor and versatility. You can have it hot or cold. And you don't have to put anything in it, though you might want to add a cinnamon stick or some ginger. That means you're able to hydrate with something other than water alone."

What Are The Benefits of Black Tea?

Have you ever wondered what some of the benefits of tea are? Tea is loaded with antioxidants which help to prevent DNA damage. Other benefits of drinking tea on a regular basis include boosting your immune system, reducing your risk of a heart attack or stroke and even reducing your risk of developing cancer. We hear about coffee all the time, but what are some of the benefits of tea, specifically black tea?

Nutritional Value of Black Tea

If you enjoy the flavor of black tea, you also have a choice to consume it in a variety of ways. Chinese people add sweetening agents, spices, chocolate, or even rare herbs while brewing black tea. In India, milk and sugar is normally added to black tea. Some people also add various herbs including ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, lemon grass, mulethi, or holy basil (tulsi).

Plain black tea is rich in antioxidants known as polyphenols and also has minimal contents of sodium, proteins, and carbohydrates. According to Boston’s School of Medicine, black tea reverses the abnormal functioning of blood vessels, which may lead to strokes and other cardiovascular conditions.

Peach Smash with Fresh Mint & White Tea

IMG_3333

This White Tea With Peach and Mint Leaves is a perfect hit for summer time. This light taste of the white tea, the summer time feel of the peach, and the refreshing mint makes this a great choice for relaxing outside this summer.

INGREDIENTS:
For honey simple syrup:
½ cup honey
½ cup water
For cocktails:
1 to 2 pyramid tea bags (or 1 to 2 teaspoons) loose leaf White Tea
1 ripe peach, cut into slices
8 fresh mint leaves
Juice from ¼ lemon
6 ice cubes
1 teaspoon honey simple syrup
4 ounces bourbon
PREPARATION:
Prepare honey simple syrup: Mix honey and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer, stirring to dissolve honey. Remove from heat and let cool completely before using. You won’t need the whole amount for these two cocktails. Store the rest in a covered glass container in the refrigerator for up to a month. Use to sweeten other cocktails or iced tea.
Brew and chill tea: Brew 1 to 2 tea bags in 8 ounces (about 1 mug) water for about 3 minutes. (Use 2 tea bags if you want a slightly stronger tea flavor.) Discard tea bag(s), let tea cool to room temperature, then place tea in refrigerator to chill.
Prepare cocktails: Set aside 2 peach slices and 2 mint leaves for garnish. Divide remaining peach slices, mint leaves, and lemon juice between 2 cocktail glasses and muddle slightly to mash the peaches. Add 2 ounces of the brewed, chilled white tea to each glass. Then divide ice, honey simple syrup, and bourbon between the glasses, and mix. Garnish glasses with reserved peach slices and mint leaves.

Black Tea Smoked Chicken Wings

These chicken wings are sure to satisfy! The complementary flavor of the tea goes great with the chicken making them the obvious choice this summer.
Ingredients:
16 whole chicken wings
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger root
1 tablespoon honey
3/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/2 cup cream sherry
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup loose leaf Black Tea
Sesame seeds as garnish
Notes: It's important to have a good kitchen exhaust fan for this recipe as it does "smoke".
You can use 3 to 4 lbs. boneless chicken thighs in place of wings.
Preparation:
1. Cut wing tip off drumstick end of wing and slice through the wings. Rinse wing pieces and pat them dry.
2. Place garlic, ginger, honey, soy sauce and sherry in a blender and process for 20 seconds to create a marinade. Pour marinade into a 9"x13" baking pan. Add wings and toss to coat with marinade. Cover pan and refrigerate at least two hours, turning wings over in marinade about halfway through.
3. Line a heavy cast iron skillet or stainless steel roasting pan with heavy-duty aluminum and sprinkle the sugar and tea on the foil. Place a cake or wire rack in the skillet or pan and arrange the marinated wings on top of the rack. Cover tightly with a lid or more foil.
4. Set the pan over high heat for 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and resist the urge to lift the lid or foil cover off the pan. Keep the wings covered for 20 more minutes so they have time to infuse with the tea smoke created by the high heat. For more browned, crisp wings, coat with a little sesame oil, set on a foil lined baking sheet, and roast in a 450- degree oven for about 5 minutes.
5. Serve with sprinkled sesame seeds. Great with peanut or mustard sauce.
